Turn a sketch or requirement into dimensions a supplier can check.

A practical guide to recording profile shape, alloy or temper requirements, dimensions, finish, length, quantity and fabrication details.

Aluminium profiles 6 min read Reviewed by Steel and Aluminium catalogue team

Terms such as angle, channel, tube and extrusion describe broad product families. A useful quote request identifies the exact geometry and critical measurements instead of relying on a familiar name alone.

Identify the profile shape

State whether the requirement is angle, channel, flat, round tube, square tube, rectangular tube or a specific extrusion. Add a sketch or drawing when the geometry is not a standard catalogue form.

Record every critical dimension

Include outside dimensions, leg or flange sizes, wall thickness, diameter, length and allowable tolerance. State units clearly and separate finished dimensions from stock lengths.

Add alloy, temper and finish requirements

If the application or drawing requires a specific alloy, temper, surface finish, anodising or coating, include it explicitly and request supporting documentation where needed.

Explain cutting and fabrication

Provide cut lengths, quantities, cut angles, hole or machining requirements and a drawing where appropriate. Confirm what preparation is included in the quote.

Check packing and delivery

Long or finished profiles can need careful packing and transport. Include the destination, receiving access and protection expectations with the enquiry.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I quote from a photograph?

A photograph can provide context, but dimensions, profile geometry, alloy or finish requirements and quantity are still needed for an accurate product match.

Do all aluminium profiles use the same alloy?

No. Available alloys and tempers depend on the product. State critical requirements and verify them against the current specification.
